Doubling the Forbidden City
Beijing, China
This was a conceptual project involving taking over the Forbidden City. Micael chose to invert the paradigm and allow all citizens to access and inhabit the area. He developed an undulating scripted surface with computer code that formed a roof/ground-scape above the site. The new intervention wrapped around the existing structures and allowed for the expansion of green space, gathering space, and residential hutongs.
The surface, initially based on Micael's reinterpretation of a Chinese poem through a Maya Embedded Language script, and then was punctured using a 3D programming tool called Grasshopper. The conceptual model depicted above was an attempt to integrate the surrounding area in layers.
The layers were ultimately distilled down in the final model based on a mapping of the existing situation and the need for certain programs in the vicinity.
